To celebrate the arrival of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, we spent the day learning about this vibrant spring festival from Sri Lanka.
シンハラ＆タミル・ニューイヤーの到来をお祝いするために、先週はスリランカのこの色鮮やかな春のお祭りについて学びました。
One of our Kinder class teachers is from Sri Lanka, and she shared many interesting traditions and stories from her culture with the children. When she asked the class if they remembered her home country, everyone excitedly shouted, “Sri Lanka!” We then located it on the world map, and when asked whether it was a big or small country, the children thoughtfully replied, “It’s small, and Japan is big!”
Kinderクラスの先生の一人がスリランカ出身で、その先生がスリランカの文化や伝統についてたくさんの興味深いお話をしてくれました。先生が「私の出身の国を覚えてる？」と聞くと、子どもたちは元気に「スリランカ！」と答えてくれました。その後、世界地図でスリランカを探し、「小さい国かな？大きい国かな？」と聞くと、「スリランカは小さくて、日本は大きい！」と答えてくれました。
The children watched a short video introducing the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and their curiosity was sparked right away. They asked many thoughtful questions as we explored the customs and culture of Sri Lanka. Just as Japan has cherry blossoms, we discovered that Sri Lanka has a beautiful red flower called the Erabadu. We also learned about a special bird called the Asian Koel, or Koha. When we looked at its picture, the children observed, “The bird is black and has red eyes!”
シンハラ＆タミル・ニューイヤーを紹介する短いビデオを観ると、子どもたちはとても興味津々で、たくさんの質問をしてくれました。スリランカにも、日本の桜のように「エラバドゥ（Erabadu）」という赤い花があることを知り、「きれいだね～！」という声も聞こえました。また、「コハ（Koha）」という特別な鳥についても学びました。写真を見た子どもたちは、「黒い鳥だ！」「目が赤い！」と観察していました。
We learned that the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated on April 13th and 14th. During this time, families in Sri Lanka decorate their homes, wear new clothes, and enjoy traditional games and food with their loved ones.
このお祭りは、4月13日と14日に行われ、スリランカの人々は家を飾ったり、新しい服を着たり、楽しいゲームをしたり、美味しい料理を食べたりして、新年を祝います。
Our main focus today was on the delicious New Year foods of Sri Lanka. Some of the children remembered Kiribath (milk rice) from last year, and when shown a picture, they excitedly recognized it. We also talked about Lunumiris, the spicy sambal that’s often eaten with Kiribath.
今日のメインアクティビティは、スリランカの特別な料理について学ぶことでした。去年は「キリバット（Kiribath）」というミルクライスを学んだことがあり、写真を見せると「これ覚えてる！」という声も上がりました。そして、そのキリバットと一緒に食べる辛いふりかけ「ルヌミリス（Lunumiris）」についても紹介しました。
This year, we introduced a few more traditional sweets, each with its own unique shape: 今年は、新しい伝統的なお菓子にも注目しました。それぞれ違った形をしていて、とてもユニークです。
The children enjoyed sketching these sweets in their sketchbooks and shared thoughtful observations about their shapes. Later, they used clay to model the food items and worked with construction paper to craft Asmi and Kavum in the afternoon.
子どもたちはこれらのお菓子をスケッチブックに描きながら、「これはボールみたい！」「これはダイヤモンドみたい！」と楽しく話してくれました。その後、粘土を使って形を作ったり、午後には工作でアスミとカウムを作ったりしました。
It was a joyful day of cultural learning, creativity, and hands-on exploration. We are proud to celebrate and learn from the diverse cultures in our classroom, and this experience was a wonderful reminder of the richness that cultural sharing brings to our learning community.
異文化について学び、実際に手を動かして体験する素晴らしい1日となりました。教室にあるさまざまな文化から学べることを大切にしながら、これからも楽しく学んでいきたいと思います。
