Today at Beyondia International School, we hosted a fun and educational event in collaboration with LocoDoor. Children explored colors, vegetables, and science through engaging, hands-on activities that supported both creativity and inquiry-based learning. The highlight of the day was natural soap making using vegetable-colored water and decorating fans with vegetable stamps.
本日、Beyondia International Schoolでは、LocoDoorとのコラボレーションによる特別イベントを開催しました。子どもたちは色、野菜、科学について、楽しくて実践的なアクティビティを通して学びました。野菜の色素を使った石けん作りと、野菜スタンプを使ったうちわのデコレーションを行いました。
We held two sessions tailored to different age groups. In the first session, children up to two years old learned about colors and vegetables in English. They created soap using natural dyes made from vegetables such as red and yellow bell peppers, carrots, and red cabbage. As the soap set in the molds, children enjoyed play-based activities like parachute games with plastic vegetables, story time, and stamping fans with vegetable shapes. This session focused on color recognition, vocabulary building, and sensory learning.
イベントは年齢別に2つのセッションに分けて行いました。最初のセッションでは、2歳までの子どもたちが対象で、英語で色や野菜の名前を学びました。赤や黄色のパプリカ、にんじん、紫キャベツなどから抽出した自然の色水を使って石けんを作り、型に流し入れて固まるのを待つ間には、パラシュートを使った遊びや、野菜のおもちゃを使った活動、絵本を楽しみました。その後、野菜をスタンプ代わりにしてうちわをデコレーションし、出来上がった石けんをラッピングして持ち帰りました。
In the second session, older children aged three to six engaged in more inquiry-based learning. We began with a discussion on why we use soap, where children offered ideas like “because our hands are dirty.” We compared the liquid soap used in class with the solid soap we would make using natural vegetable colors. Instead of introducing the vegetables by name, we encouraged children to identify them by sight. We then matched each vegetable to its dye color—red from red bell pepper, orange from carrot, purple from red cabbage, brown from onion, and yellow from yellow bell pepper. We also explained how colors were extracted—by boiling or squeezing the vegetables.
次のセッションでは、3歳から6歳の子どもたちが参加し、より探究的なスタイルで活動を行いました。まず、なぜ石けんが必要なのかをみんなで考え、「手が汚れているから」などの意見が出ました。そして、教室で使っている液体石けんと、これから作る固形石けんの違いを紹介し、今日使う野菜を見せて、名前を当ててもらいました。そこから、野菜の色と実物をマッチングしながら、赤パプリカ→赤、にんじん→オレンジ、紫キャベツ→紫、たまねぎ→茶色、黄パプリカ→黄色といった色を確認しました。色の抽出方法についても話し、紫キャベツやたまねぎは煮て色を取り出し、他の野菜はすりおろしてジュースにして色を作りました。
A fun moment occurred when mixing red cabbage dye, which changed from purple to green when combined with the soap mixture, sparking curiosity and excitement.
石けん作りの過程では、紫キャベツの色水を石けん液に混ぜると緑色に変化するという驚きの発見があり、子どもたちからは「なんで！？」と興味津々な反応が見られました。
While the soaps were setting in the refrigerator, children conducted a science experiment to explore which fruits and vegetables float or sink. After forming teams and predicting results, they tested items like tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, onion, lotus root, potato, and apple. We discovered that most underground vegetables sank, while those grown above ground floated. However, the tomato sank due to its high sugar content—something new for many of the children.
石けんが固まるのを待つ間には、野菜や果物が浮くか沈むかを調べる科学実験を行いました。3つのグループに分かれてチームメンバーと自己紹介をした後、きゅうり、たまねぎ、トマト、パプリカ、れんこん、じゃがいも、りんごの7種類を水に入れて検証。事前に「浮く／沈む」を予想してから実際に試し、地下で育つ野菜は沈み、地上で育つ野菜は浮く傾向があるということを発見しました。ただし、トマトは沈み、LocoDoorの先生が「甘いトマトは沈むことがある」と教えてくれました。
The experiment concluded with a surprise observation: even though our giant pumpkin was very heavy, it floated, showing that weight alone does not determine whether something sinks or floats.
最後に、巨大なかぼちゃを使って観察を行いました。「とても重いから沈むかも」と思った子どもたちでしたが、実際には水に浮かび、重さだけで沈むわけではないということを学びました。
After the experiment, the children returned to decorate fans using vegetable stamps and mixed colors to create new shades. They then wrapped their soaps to take home and spent time in the Beyondia Lounge playing with balloons, an ice cream cart, and more.
実験の後は、野菜スタンプを使ってうちわをデコレーションし、色を混ぜながらオリジナルの色合いを作る楽しさも味わいました。最後に、固まった石けんをラッピングし、Beyondia Loungeエリアでアイスクリームカートや風船などを使って自由遊びを楽しみました。
This event was a joyful blend of science, creativity, and language learning, offering children a chance to explore real-world concepts in a meaningful way. Thank you to all the families who joined us—we hope this was a memorable and inspiring experience for everyone.
