Last month, the K2/K3 class started our new inquiry theme “How the World Works” and, under this theme, we have been inquiring about Light.

先月から、新しい探究テーマ「世界のしくみ（How the World Works）」が始まり、その中で K2/K3クラスが “光” についての探究を始めました。

To explore this, we began with a simple but fascinating experiment. I covered a toy with a solid bowl and asked the children, “Can you see what’s inside?” They said no — because they couldn’t see through the bowl! But when I replaced it with a bowl with holes, they could peek inside and said, “Yes, now we can see!”

最初の学びは、簡単だけれどとてもおもしろい実験でした。おもちゃをボウルで隠し、「中に何があるかわかる？」と子どもたちに聞くと、穴のないボウルでは「見えない！」と答えていました。でも、穴のあいたボウルに変えると、中が見えて「見えるよ！」と大喜びでした。

We then turned off the lights in our classroom and closed our eyes. The children noticed right away:そのあと、教室の電気を消して目を閉じてみました。子どもたちはすぐに気づきました。

• We can’t see when it’s dark./ 暗いと見えない
• We can’t see with our eyes closed./ 目を閉じると見えない

They quickly pointed out different light sources around them: the sunlight coming through the window, the classroom lights, and even flashlights and streetlights!

そして、周りにある光の源（ライト）をたくさん見つけました。窓から入る太陽の光、教室の明かり、懐中電灯や街灯などです。

When we talked about why we can’t see the sun at night, our K3 friends explained that the Earth is spinning, so the sun is on the other side. One K2 friend shared a creative idea: “Maybe at night, the sun goes to America, and in the morning, it comes back here!” We were so impressed with their imaginative thinking!

「どうして夜はおひさまが見えないの？」という話では、K3のお友だちが「地球が回っているから、反対側に行くんだよ」と教えてくれました。K2のお友だちからは、「夜はアメリカに行って、朝になるとまたここに帰ってくるんだよ！」というかわいいアイデアも出てきました。子どもたちの想像力に、みんなでほっこりしました。

Next, we had a game to sort picture cards into sources of light or not sources of light. The kids really enjoyed the activity, and we had fun sorting the cards together. At the end, we made a nice poster with our findings.

次に、光を出すものと出さないものをカードで分けるゲームをしました。子どもたちはとても楽しそうに取り組み、最後にはみんなで素敵なポスターを作りました。

The next day, we moved to the piano room and noticed light streaming through the glass. Using colorful Magna-Tiles, we created beautiful designs and observed how light passing through the tiles created beautiful reflections on the floor. Sometimes, the reflection disappeared — and the children noticed that this happened when the sun was covered by clouds.

翌日、ピアノルームに移動すると、ガラスから差し込む光に気づきました。カラフルなマグネットタイルを使って模様を作り、光を通したときに床にできるきれいな反射を観察しました。雲で太陽が隠れると反射が消えることにも気づきました。

To explore this further, we placed white paper on the floor and tried to trace the colorful reflections of the Magna-Tiles. It was a fun, hands-on way to see how light moves and changes!

さらに、白い紙を床に置いて、マグネットタイルの反射をなぞってみました。光の動きや変化を楽しく体験できる活動でした。
